Saint Demetrius (Narrow Panel)

Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr was a young Roman officer in Thessaloniki, appointed to persecute Christians. Instead he preached the faith openly, and for that he paid with his life around the year 306, run through with spears in prison. Myrrh has flowed from his relics for centuries, which is why he is called the Myrrh-streaming. His church in Thessaloniki is still one of the great shrines of the Balkans. In Serbia his feast, Mitrovdan on 8 November, is one of the most common family patron days.

He is shown here as the Byzantine tradition most often presents him: young and beardless, in military armour over a red tunic, a spear in his right hand and a shield at his left shoulder. Behind his head is a halo with gold ornament worked in relief, and the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ runs across the top.

The panel is narrow and elongated, with an arch cut by hand on one side only, so the edge is not symmetrical. The gold on the halo and the lettering is in relief and catches the light at an angle. The narrow format is deliberate: for a narrow wall, a door frame, a shelf or an icon corner where a wider piece will not fit.
