Saint Basil the Great (c. 330-379), Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, is one of the three Holy Hierarchs whom the Church celebrates together, along with Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint John Chrysostom. He wrote the Liturgy that bears his name and which is still served ten times a year, and he founded the first Christian hospital and shelter for the poor - the "Basiliad". In the icon he is shown in an episcopal vestment patterned with crosses (the polystavrion), with a dark beard and a high forehead, holding the Gospel. Beside the halo stands the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ.

Saint Basil the Great is celebrated on 14 January, a day known among the Serbian people as the Serbian New Year, and he is a frequent patron-saint feast (slava). Before his icon the faithful pray for wisdom, for justice in decisions and for mercy toward those in hardship. This piece is mounted on a dark board with metal cross-fittings and brass studs - the look of the old metal-clad icons.
