Saint Basil the Great was the Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia in the 4th century and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint John Chrysostom. He became renowned as a great theologian and defender of the Orthodox faith, the author of the famous Divine Liturgy that still bears his name today, and a builder of Christian charity. On this icon he is shown as a hierarch, with a high forehead and a dark, pointed beard, in a white hierarchical vestment (omophorion) adorned with crosses. In his hands he holds a lavishly decorated Gospel book, a sign of his preaching and teaching ministry. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ Ο ΜΕΓΑΣ" means "Saint Basil the Great".
Believers pray to Saint Basil for wisdom, steadfastness in faith, health, and a blessing upon the home. His icon holds a special place in the icon corner, on a home iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, and for many Serbian families Saint Basil is also their krsna slava (family patron saint). He is celebrated on January 14, the day of the Old New Year (Little Christmas), so the icon is a worthy gift for a slava, but also for a baptism, name day, wedding, or housewarming - a lasting sign of faith and protection.
