Saint Augustine of Hippo (gold patina)

On this icon Saint Augustine is shown as the East sees him - not as a philosopher at his desk, but as a bishop in a sakkos marked with crosses and an omophorion across his shoulders. The omophorion is the broad band a hierarch wears as a sign that he carries the lost sheep on his shoulders; in Augustine's case that sign carries particular weight, for before he became a shepherd he was himself a sheep that wandered a long time. He blesses with his right hand and holds an ornamented Gospel book in his left. Beside the halo stands the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΥΓΟΥΣΤΙΝΟΣ.

Hippo was a coastal city in North Africa, in present-day Algeria, and Augustine was its bishop to the end of his life. Though the West knows him better, the Orthodox calendar also commemorates him, and Greek and Athonite workshops have made his icon for centuries. Before it pray those who seek faith and do not find it at once, parents for children who have drifted away, and all who need patience - for Augustine's road from searching to faith took years, not a single day.
