Saint Augustine of Hippo (3D Icon)

Saint Augustine (354-430), known in the Orthodox tradition also as Blessed Augustine, was bishop of the city of Hippo in North Africa. He spent his youth far from the faith, searching and wandering, while his mother, Saint Monica, prayed for him for years. He was baptised as a grown man and described his road to God in the Confessions, a book still read all over the world.

He is shown here as a bishop, in a white vestment covered with crosses and an omophorion with large black crosses. He blesses with his right hand and holds a Gospel in a gold binding in his left. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΥΓΟΥΣΤΙΝΟΣ runs across the top.

The image is printed on a cut-out mounted on top of the dark board, so the saint rises above the base. That is why we call this series 3D icons. The gold halo and the lettering are in relief, and the wave-cut edge of the board rounds off the whole piece.
