Saint Apostle Matthias was one of the seventy disciples of Christ, and after the Ascension of the Lord he was chosen by lot to take the place that had been left empty by the apostasy of Judas Iscariot, thus being numbered among the twelve apostles. Together with the other apostles he received the grace of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and set out to preach the Gospel, and for his faith he was in the end martyred. On this icon he is depicted as a grey-haired elder with a long white beard, in a blue undergarment and a golden-yellow outer robe, while in his hand he holds a white scroll bound with a red ribbon - a sign of the apostolic preaching and the word of God that he carried to the nations. His head is encircled by a golden halo with a beaded rim, and behind him is a blue background with brush strokes. The Greek inscription "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΜΑΤΘΙΑΣ" means "Saint Matthias".

The faithful pray to Apostle Matthias for strengthening in the faith, for a clear path and the right decision, since he himself was chosen by the will of God, as well as for help and protection in temptations. The icon finds its place in the holy corner of the home, on the household iconostasis or in a prayer nook, where it gathers the family for prayer. It makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for the patron saint day (slava) of those who celebrate Saint Apostle Matthias, as well as for a baptism, name day or as a blessing for the home. The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Apostle Matthias on August 9.
