Saint Anthony the Great is regarded as the father of Christian monasticism and eremitism. Born in Egypt, he renounced his possessions and withdrew into the desert, where he spent decades in prayer, fasting, and struggle against temptations, remaining a model for every ascetic. In this icon he is depicted as an old monk with a long gray beard, in a dark red monastic robe and a blue-gray cowl (monastic hood) with a small cross; in his hand he holds an ascetic's staff and a scroll bearing a teaching. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟC ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟC means "Saint Anthony." The golden halo around his head signifies holiness and heavenly glory.
The faithful pray to Saint Anthony the Great for the strengthening of faith, perseverance in temptations, inner peace, and healing.
