Saint Anthony the Great (251-356) was born in Egypt to a well-off family. As a young man he heard the gospel line about selling everything and giving it to the poor, understood that it was addressed to him, and did exactly that. He went into the desert and stayed there for more than eighty years. So many followed him that the Egyptian desert, as Saint Athanasius the Great writes in his Life, "was settled by monks". That is why he is called the father of monasticism. His feast falls on 30 January.

Here he is shown as an old man with a long grey beard, in the dark monastic schema with the hood drawn over his head, his right hand raised in blessing and an open Greek scroll in his left. There is no display and no gilded ground behind the figure, which suits the life he led. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ runs across the top.

The panel is narrow and elongated, with an arch cut by hand on one side only, so the edge is not symmetrical. The halo and the lettering are worked in relief, so the gold catches the light at an angle. The narrow format is deliberate: for a narrow wall, a door frame, a shelf or an icon corner where a wider piece will not fit.
