Saint Anne with the Theotokos (Narrow Panel)

Saint Anne is the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos and the grandmother of our Lord Jesus Christ. She and her husband Joachim remained childless for decades, at a time when a barren woman was held to be rejected by God. The two of them kept praying to the end, and late in life they were given a daughter whom, by their vow, they brought to the Temple. That is why Saint Anne has for centuries been the one to whom couples waiting for a child and mothers praying for their children turn. The Dormition of Saint Anne falls on 7 August.

On this piece Anne is shown in a deep red maphorion, with the Theotokos as a small girl on her left arm. In her right hand she holds a white lily, the flower of purity, standing here for the daughter she prayed into being. The young Theotokos is in dark blue with a halo of her own, because what she is to become is already visible. The Greek inscription Η ΑΓΙΑ ΑΝΝΑ runs across the top.

The panel is narrow and elongated, with an arch cut by hand on one side only, so the edge is not symmetrical. The halos and the lettering are worked in relief, so the gold catches the light at an angle and the piece changes through the day. The narrow format is deliberate: for a narrow wall, a door frame, a shelf or an icon corner where a wider piece will not fit.
