Saint Andrew the First-Called (rustic edge)

The Holy Apostle Andrew, a fisherman from Bethsaida and brother of the Apostle Peter, was the first to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, which is why the Church honors him as the First-Called. The Greek inscription on the icon reads "Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΝΔΡΕΑΣ Ο ΠΡΩΤΟΚΛΗΤΟΣ" - Saint Andrew the First-Called. After the descent of the Holy Spirit he preached the Gospel throughout the Balkans, along the shores of the Black Sea, and across the lands that would later become the cradle of Slavic Orthodoxy. On this icon he is shown in a red mantle over a dark green robe, holding an open book, with a large diagonal cross behind him. On such an X-shaped cross he suffered a martyr's death in the Greek city of Patras, and to this day that shape is called Saint Andrew's Cross.

The faithful pray to Saint Andrew for steadfastness in faith, for the blessing of the family, and for protection while traveling. His icon holds a place of honor in the home's icon corner, on a family iconostasis, or in a prayer nook. It is a special and precious gift for Saint Andrew's Day (December 13), which many Serbian families celebrate as their patron saint's day (krsna slava), as well as for a baptism, name day, or wedding. For those who bear the name Andrija or Andrej, he will be a close heavenly protector and patron.
