Saint Andrew the First-Called (Dark Board)

The inscription beside the halo reads Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΝΔΡΕΑΣ, drawn in gold strokes on the dark ground. Saint Andrew is shown at full height in a dark green mantle over a red tunic, a scroll in his hand and a large diagonal cross behind him. That X-shaped cross is not ornament but the sign of his martyrdom, and it is known throughout the world today as Saint Andrew's cross.

Andrew was Peter's brother and a fisherman, and the Gospel calls him the First-Called because he was the first to follow the Lord and at once brought his brother as well - and that is the whole of him: a man who does not keep what he has found for himself. Tradition ties him to preaching along the shores of the Black Sea and to Byzantium, so he is honoured by Greeks, Russians and Serbs alike; he is commemorated on 13 December. This version is on a dark board with an arched top and a wave-cut foot, so it reads like a small altar plaque.
