Saint Anastasia the Deliverer from Bonds is one of the most venerated women saints of the Christian East, known as a healer of the sick and a protector of the imprisoned. The Greek inscription Η ΑΓΙΑ ΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΙΑ and the epithet Pharmakolytria (deliverer through healing remedies) bear witness to the gift the Church attributes to her - to ease bodily suffering and to free those held in chains. On the icon she is shown holding a cross in one hand, a sign of the martyrdom and faith for which she suffered, and in the other a small vessel of healing myrrh with which she tended the wounds of persecuted Christians. Her name, Anastasia, means "resurrection," while her title, the Deliverer, speaks of her care for all who are bound - by illness, by prison, or by a heavy-laden soul.
Saint Anastasia is celebrated on January 4th (December 22nd by the old calendar).
