This icon depicts the magnificent end of the earthly life of the holy Prophet Elijah: his ascent into heaven in a fiery chariot drawn by fiery horses. By God's will, Elijah did not taste death, but was taken up alive in a whirlwind, while his disciple Elisha watched after him and received his mantle and prophetic spirit.
Prophet Elijah has always been for the people the master of thunder and heavenly fire, a zealot of the faith who will not tolerate falsehood and idolatry. The feast of Elijah (2 August) is kept with particular reverence. Before this icon the faithful pray for zeal in the faith, for protection from storms, and for rain and harvest.
