An eschatological icon of the Second Coming of Christ - an image of what awaits the world at the end of time. Christ as Judge at the center, angels, saints, paradise and hell depicted in a composition that guides the eye through different layers of salvation history.
The icon of the Last Judgment is not frightening but sober - it reminds us of the seriousness of earthly life and the inevitability of every choice. It is commemorated on the Sunday before Great Lent (Meatfare Sunday), as a preparation for the time of repentance.
