Saint Gerasimos of Kefalonia lived in the sixteenth century. He was born in the Peloponnese, became a monk and lived as an ascetic on Mount Athos, served for many years in Jerusalem, and spent the last decades of his life on the island of Kefalonia. There he restored a monastery he named New Jerusalem and gathered a sisterhood around him. His relics remain incorrupt and are kept in that monastery, and the people of Kefalonia still regard him as the protector of the island.

He should not be confused with Saint Gerasimos of the Jordan, the fifth-century desert father who was served by a lion. Here Gerasimos of Kefalonia is shown as an old man with a long white beard, in a dark monastic hood marked with a small red cross and in the great schema bearing the words IC XC NIKA. He holds an open scroll with the words he taught his sisterhood: "Little children, live in peace among yourselves and do not think highly of yourselves". Beside the halo stands the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΡΑΣΙΜΟΣ Ο ΕΝ ΚΕΦΑΛΛΗΝΙΑ, on a gold ground framed by a dark red border.
