Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God

This icon depicts the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God - the joyful event that opens the history of our salvation, the coming into the world of the little girl Mary, the future Mother of God. Her parents, the righteous Joachim and Anna, remained childless for many years and awaited a child through prayer and tears, so Mary's birth was received as a gift from God and the fulfillment of a long-awaited promise. At the center of the icon, Saint Anna rests on her bed, having just given birth, surrounded by midwives who tend to her and carry vessels of water. In the lower part of the scene, the infant Mary is being bathed - a tender, intimate moment that fills the whole image with the warmth of home. At the top of the icon stands the Greek inscription ΤΟ ΓΕΝΕΣΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ - the Nativity of the Theotokos.

The feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, known in Serbian tradition as Mala Gospojina (the Lesser Feast of the Mother of God), is celebrated on September 21. The faithful turn to the Mother of God as the most tender intercessor before her Son - in prayer for health, family, children, and comfort in difficult days. This icon has its place in the home's icon corner, in the bedroom, or beside the family hearth, and it makes a special gift for those who keep Mala Gospojina as their family patron saint day (krsna slava), for newlyweds, and for families expecting or welcoming a new child. Each piece is made in our workshop in Petrovcic, near Belgrade.
