The Mother of God the Three-Handed (Tricheirousa) is one of the most preciously preserved types of icon of the Most Holy Mother of God. She is depicted as a Hodegetria - holding the God-child Christ and pointing to him with her hand - but with the characteristic third hand at the bottom of the icon. According to tradition, St. John of Damascus, a Father of the Church from the eighth century, prayed before this icon after the caliph had his hand cut off on a false accusation. By morning his hand was healed. In gratitude, he attached a silver hand to the icon - hence the name Tricheirousa. The icon later came to Hilandar Monastery on the Holy Mountain, where it remains today as the protectress of Serbian Holy Mountain monasticism. The Greek inscriptions ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God) and ΙΣ ΧΣ (Jesus Christ) on the golden background place it within the eternal Tradition of the Church.
For the Serbian people the Tricheirousa holds a special place: as the protectress of Hilandar, she is also the protectress of all that the Serbian people have built on the Holy Mountain over the centuries. Before her the faithful pray for healing, for protection from injustice, and for God's help in difficult moments - just as St. John of Damascus himself once prayed.

Delivery
We ship all orders within Serbia only. Delivery takes 10-15 business days from order confirmation - this includes crafting, packaging and transport.
Icons are sent by courier, with proof of delivery. Packaging is twofold - an inner layer with protective foam and an outer cushioning layer for safe transport.
