Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God the Softening of Evil Hearts (Seven Arrows)

The seven swords piercing the heart of the Most Holy Mother of God are not an image of defeat - but of a motherly compassion that knows no bounds. This iconographic type visualises the prophetic words of the righteous Simeon, who said over the newborn Christ in the Temple to the Mother of God: "And a sword shall pierce through your own soul" (Lk 2:35). The Church recognised those seven swords - arrows - in the seven sorrows the Mother of God carried from Bethlehem to Golgotha and beyond. In the icon she is depicted in a red maphorion on a blue background, with the Greek inscription ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God), serene despite the pain.

Before this icon pray those who seek peace in the home, reconciliation after a quarrel, the softening of a hard heart - their own or another's. She is also called "the Softening of Evil Hearts". She who herself endured the greatest pain with serenity carries the prayers of those who find no peace in their home. She differs from the icon "of Seven Sorrows" in a specific iconographic type: she depicts the Mother of God alone, without attendants, with the swords directed toward her heart.
