Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God Hodegetria (the Guide)

Hodegetria (Greek: "the Guide", "She Who Shows the Way") is one of the oldest and most widespread types of icon of the Most Holy Mother of God. The Mother of God holds the God-child Christ on her arm and with her free hand points to him - not to herself. In that simple gesture her role in the Orthodox faith is summed up: she does not draw attention to herself, but directs everyone who approaches to her Son.

Tradition attributes the first such image to the holy Apostle and Evangelist St. Luke. For centuries the Hodegetria has been the icon before which homes have sought blessing and peace. The Greek inscriptions "ΜΡ ΘΥ" (Mother of God) and "ΙΣ ΧΣ" (Jesus Christ) on the golden background place the image outside of time. This is the icon for those who seek in the Mother of God not only consolation, but also direction.
