The Holy Apostle Paul, called the Apostle of the Nations, was at first a fierce persecutor of Christians by the name of Saul. On the road to Damascus the risen Christ appeared to him in brilliant light, and Saul, blinded for a moment yet seeing with his spirit, became the most zealous preacher of the very faith he had until then persecuted.
He travelled throughout the known world proclaiming Christ, founded many churches and wrote fourteen epistles that form part of Holy Scripture. He suffered martyrdom in Rome. His feast day is shared with St. Peter on the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul (12 July). Before his icon the faithful pray for zeal in faith and the strength to profess it.
