The icon of Christ's Descent into Hades - in Orthodox tradition, this is the true icon of the Resurrection. It does not depict the moment of emerging from the tomb, but offers a deeper theological insight: Christ descending into the realm of death, breaking the gates of hell and leading Adam and Eve out of the prison of eternal oblivion.
This icon is sung throughout Holy Saturday and Paschal night. Beneath Christ's feet lie the shattered vestibule of hell, keys and shackles scattered about - an image of cosmic victory over death. Adam and Eve, the first ancestors of humanity, raise their hands toward the Saviour who leads them into the light. This is the moment when the history of the Fall ends and the history of salvation begins.
