St. Silouan of Mount Athos (1866 to 1938) was a Russian peasant who came to the Holy Mountain as a young man and became a monk of the Monastery of St. Panteleimon. Without great education, through deep prayer and humility, he acquired a rare gift of knowledge of God and love for every person, even for enemies.
The Lord once spoke to him in a time of temptation words that have since become a guiding light for many: "Keep your mind in hell, and despair not." His teaching on prayer for the whole world and on love for enemies still touches hearts to this day. He was glorified in 1987; his feast day is September 24th. Before his icon, the faithful pray for humility, for love of neighbour, and for hope in despair.
