The holy hieromartyr Cyprian was in his youth a famous sorcerer and magician in Antioch, who used his power over unclean forces to harm people. When he tried to use his spells to draw away a Christian girl named Justina, she shielded herself with the sign of the cross and prayer - and all his magic was rendered powerless before her faith.
Defeated, Cyprian burned his books of sorcery, received baptism, and later became a bishop, ultimately suffering martyrdom for Christ together with Justina. For this reason, St. Cyprian and St. Justina have for centuries been invoked as protectors against spells, curses, and every unclean force. Their feast day is October 2nd. Before their icon, the faithful pray for the protection of their home from evil and enchantment.
