Icon of Patriarch Pavle

Patriarch Pavle (1914-2009) was the 44th Serbian Patriarch, on the throne of Saint Sava from 1990 to 2009. Before that he served thirty-three years as Bishop of Raska and Prizren. He is remembered for a life stripped of anything unnecessary: he walked or took public transport, mended his own shoes, and answered the largest questions with one short sentence that is still quoted today: "Let us be human."

This is not a canonical icon but a portrait on a board. The Patriarch is shown in profile, in the white patriarchal kamilavka with its cross, hands folded beneath his beard in prayer. The background is deliberately dark and empty, so the face and the hands are all there is to see. The Serbian Church has not canonised him, so the piece carries no halo and no "saint" inscription, and we do not describe him that way either. It is a memorial portrait for the home, for those to whom Patriarch Pavle was and remains a measure of how to behave.
