Archangel Michael is the commander of the heavenly hosts - the supreme leader of the heavenly armies. According to tradition, he led the faithful angels in battle against the fallen Lucifer and his forces, and is therefore the protector of all who struggle against evil. His name is the cry "Who is like God?" - the answer to the pride of the fallen angel.
In the Orthodox faith Michael is invoked as protector in danger, defender of soul and body, and guardian at the hour of death. He is depicted as a warrior with a sword or spear, often vanquishing a dragon - the image of evil. Many Serbian families celebrate the feast of Archangel Michael (Aranđelovdan, November 21) as their krsna slava. Before his icon the faithful pray for protection, courage and victory over temptations.
