The Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste were Christian Roman soldiers who suffered at the beginning of the 4th century in the city of Sebaste, in Armenia, during the reign of Emperor Licinius. Because they refused to renounce Christ, they were condemned to spend the night naked on a frozen lake, while a warm bathhouse burned on the shore to lure them into denying their faith - and it is this very bathhouse that appears on the left of the icon, with its red domed roof. The Greek inscription at the top, ΟΙ ΑΓ. ΤΕΣΣΑΡΑΚΟΝΤΑ ΜΑΡΤΥΡΕΣ (The Holy Forty Martyrs), names their entire holy company. Above them the Lord Jesus Christ blesses and lowers forty heavenly wreaths - as many as there were sufferers. Tradition tells that one of them gave in and ran toward the bathhouse, but one of the guards, seeing the wreaths descending, confessed Christ and joined the martyrs so that once again there were forty.
The faithful pray to the Holy Forty Martyrs for perseverance in faith, courage in trials, and for harmony within the family and home. Among the Serbian people their feast day, March 22, is known as Mladenci and is associated with young married couples and love, when by custom forty braided cakes are baked. The icon sits beautifully in the home's icon corner, on a household iconostasis, or in a prayer nook, and it also makes a warm spiritual gift for a wedding, a patron saint's day (slava), a baptism, or a name day.
