A diptych is a two-panel icon joined on a fold, which folds like a book - easily carried on a journey, placed on a desk or beside a pillow, and opened when the time for prayer comes. On this diptych, two beloved figures of Orthodoxy are united. St. Nicholas of Myra, wonderworker and protector of travelers, sailors and children, is known as the "swift helper" - the one who comes to the aid of those in need.
Across from him is the Most Holy Mother of God the "Softening of Evil Hearts", also known as the Seven Arrows - depicted with seven arrows piercing her heart, an image of Simeon's prophecy that a sword would pass through her own soul as well. Before this icon the faithful pray for the calming of anger, for the reconciliation of those at odds, and for the softening of hearts hardened by hatred. Together, these two figures form a diptych of protection on the road and peace in the home.
