This icon depicts the Descent from the Cross - one of the most moving moments of Holy Week, recounted in the Gospels. After Jesus had breathed His last, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body and, together with Nicodemus, carefully takes Him down from the cross. The Mother of God receives her Son into her arms and presses her face to His, while the myrrh-bearing women stand beside them in silent grief. Across the top runs the Greek inscription Η ΑΠΟΚΑΘΗΛΩΣΙΣ - the Descent from the Cross, as this scene is known in Orthodox iconography. The composition joins the sorrow of Golgotha with the quiet hope that already points toward the Resurrection.
The scene belongs to the observance of Great and Holy Friday, when the Church solemnly lives through Christ's Passion and His placing in the tomb. Before an icon such as this, the faithful pray in moments of loss, mourning and repentance, seeking comfort in the compassion of the Most Holy Mother of God. It suits the icon corner at home and a quiet place of prayer, and as a gift it carries special meaning for someone passing through a difficult chapter of life or drawn to devotion to Christ's Passion.
