Deesis - Christ, the Mother of God and Saint John the Baptist (rustic wings)

The Deesis (Greek Δέησις - "supplication") is one of the oldest and most sacred scenes in Orthodox iconography. In the center is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Pantocrator, with a halo bearing the letters O ΩN ("He Who Is") and the inscription IC XC (Jesus Christ); with His right hand He blesses, and in His left He holds a golden Gospel. On the left is the Most Holy Mother of God with the inscription MP ΘV (Mother of God), and on the right Saint John the Baptist and Forerunner. The Mother of God and Saint John are turned toward Christ with their hands raised, praying to Him for the human race - which is why this scene is called "supplication." According to tradition, they are the closest intercessors and advocates for man before the Lord.

The faithful turn to the Deesis when they seek intercession before Christ, uniting their prayer with the prayer of the Mother of God and the Forerunner. The triptych folds like small doors, so it easily finds a place in the holy corner, on a home iconostasis or in a prayer nook, but also on a table or shelf. It makes a worthy gift for a family patron saint day (krsna slava), a baptism, a wedding or a name day. Saint John the Baptist is especially celebrated on Saint John's Day (January 20) and at the Beheading of Saint John (September 11).
