Christ the Great High Priest

The icon of the Great High Priest shows the Lord as the liturgical life of the Church sees Him - not in the tunic and mantle of a travelling teacher, but in a sakkos sewn with crosses, an omophorion across the shoulders and a mitre on His head. On the open book stands the Greek text Η ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΑ Η ΕΜΗ ΟΥΚ ΕΣΤΙΝ ΕΚ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΥ ΤΟΥΤΟΥ - My kingdom is not of this world, the words the Lord spoke before Pilate. The right hand is raised in blessing, the letters Ο ΩΝ stand in the halo, and the red abbreviation ΙΣ ΧΣ at the sides.

The Letter to the Hebrews calls Christ the high priest who offered the sacrifice once and for all - Himself. On this icon, therefore, royal robes and priestly vesture do not exclude each other but stand together: the one who blesses and the one who offers are the same. The icon is traditionally chosen for the sanctuary and for the homes of clergy, but equally for anyone who wants an icon that recalls the liturgy and not only private prayer. The board is narrow and tall, its top cut away and its foot shaped into two prongs.
