Christ Pantocrator (Gold Panel with Studs)

Christ is shown half-length, in a deep red tunic and a green mantle, blessing with His right hand while His left steadies a closed Gospel book set with a diamond ornament. The closed book is not accidental: where an open Gospel on an icon carries one particular verse the Lord is speaking, a closed one stands for the whole word of God at once, with no single line singled out. Beside the halo are the letters Ο ΩΝ - the name by which God revealed Himself to Moses from the burning bush - and at the sides, in red strokes, the abbreviation ΙΣ ΧΣ.

What sets this icon apart is how it is made. The gilded board bearing the figure is not painted straight onto the backing; it is produced separately, raised onto a larger dark board and fastened with four brass studs at the corners. That difference in height gives the icon a shadow along its edge and makes it read like a frame without glass. In an icon corner this means the face stays in the foreground even when the wall behind it is not bare.
