Christ Enthroned (Narrow Gilded Board)

On the open book in Christ's left hand stands the Greek text ΔΕΥΤΕ ΠΡΟΣ ΜΕ ΠΑΝΤΕΣ ΟΙ ΚΟΠΙΩΝΤΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΠΕΦΟΡΤΙΣΜΕΝΟΙ ΚΑΓΩ ΑΝΑΠΑΥΣΩ ΥΜΑΣ - Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. The Lord sits on a carved throne with a crimson cushion, bare feet resting on a footstool, blessing with His right hand. Beside the halo stand the letters Ο ΩΝ, and at the sides the red abbreviation ΙΣ ΧΣ.

This is Christ as Judge and King, yet with a sentence that invites rather than condemns - and that is the whole point of the enthroned icon. The format is unusual: the board is narrow and tall, its sides cut in an irregular wave, with dark wooden strips at top and bottom. An icon like this asks for a narrow wall, a door frame or a shelf where a wider board will not fit, and it stands best on its own.
