Christ Anapeson (The Unsleeping Eye)

The Greek inscription beside the figure reads Ο ΑΝΑΠΕΣΩΝ - "He who has lain down". In the Slavic tradition the same icon is called The Unsleeping Eye. Christ is shown as a child reclining on His hand, in a pale tunic and a golden cover, upon a crimson bolster trimmed with blue bands. The body is at rest, but the gaze is awake and turned toward whoever looks at the icon - and there the whole message lies. Beside the halo stand the letters Ο ΩΝ, the name by which God revealed Himself to Moses from the bush.

The icon joins two things that at first glance do not agree: sleep and vigilance. The Old Testament blessing of Judah speaks of a lion that has lain down and whom none dare rouse, and the psalm says that He who keeps His people will neither slumber nor sleep. From this the Anapeson is also read as a foreshadowing of Christ's rest in the tomb, from which He rises. This is why the icon is most often given to the parents of a newborn and hung above a child's bed - a sign that someone keeps watch even when the whole house is asleep.
