The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel are the leaders of the heavenly hosts and God's closest messengers. Archangel Michael, commander of the bodiless powers, is the protector of the faithful and the vanquisher of evil, while Archangel Gabriel proclaims God's will to mankind - it was his voice that brought the Annunciation to the Most Holy Mother of God. On this icon they are depicted full-figure, at full height and facing one another, dressed in richly adorned imperial robes. Between them, within a medallion, is the image of Christ the Lord, before whom they stand as faithful servants and leaders of the angelic ranks. Beside their figures are the Greek inscriptions Ο ΑΡΧ ΜΙΧΑΗΛ and Ο ΑΡΧ ΓΑΒΡΙΗΛ.
The Synaxis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, popularly known as Aranđelovdan (the feast of the Archangels), is celebrated on 21 November and is one of the most common family patron-saint feasts (krsna slava) in Serbian homes. The faithful pray to the archangels for protection, for strength in times of temptation, and for guidance along the right path. The icon finds its place in the home's icon corner, beside the icon of the family's patron saint or in a prayer nook. It also makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for Aranđelovdan, for a baptism, or for anyone who bears the name of one of the holy archangels.
