Archangel Michael (3D Icon)

The Archangel Michael is the Archistrategos, commander of the heavenly host that stayed faithful to God. His name in Hebrew means "Who is like God?", and that question is his whole character: no one is equal to God, not even the brightest of angels. In Serbia his feast, Arandjelovdan on 21 November, is one of the most common family patron days.

Here he stands at full height, wings spread with blue and gold feathers, in a red cloak over a white robe. In his right hand he holds a staff with a cross, and in his left a translucent sphere with a cross on top. The Greek inscription Ο ΑΡΧΩΝ ΜΙΧΑΗΛ runs across the top.

This is a 3D icon: the cut-out with the archangel is mounted on top of the dark board as a second layer, so the figure casts a shadow, and seen from the side the icon shows its depth. The halo and the inscription are in raised gold, and the edge of the board is wavy and darkened.
