The Archangel Gabriel is the messenger of God. It was he who told the priest Zechariah that a son, John the Baptist, would be born to him, and he who brought the Most Holy Theotokos the news that she would bear the Son of God. That is why the Orthodox call him the archangel of the Annunciation. The Church celebrates his Synaxis on 8 April, the day after the Annunciation, and again on 26 July.
He is shown here at full height with wings spread, in a dark blue cloak over a pink robe with gold embroidery. In his right hand he holds the slender staff of a messenger, and in his left a translucent sphere. He stands on green ground, and the Greek inscription Ο ΑΡΧΩΝ ΓΑΒΡΙΗΛ runs across the top.
The archangel is printed on a separate cut-out mounted on top of the dark board, so the figure stands in front of the background rather than in it. That is what makes this a 3D icon. The gold halo and the lettering are in relief, and the edge of the board is cut in a wave.
